We are heading into an extraordinary era of Demarcian history - the era of the unification of the Social Democrats and Greens, the long lost brothers and sisters.

With the sensational deal struck on 13 October between Jeskia and MikeBodwin, the two parties' respective leaders, the full year of separation between these two grand ideological traditions in Demarcia might finally have come to an end. The Social Democrats and Greens are finally coming together, into one big tent, one broad and colourful alliance, a red-green kinship, that will transform the country in ways unimaginable.

This unification of the Social Democrats and Greens is something that has come about naturally and could have been expected for a long time. The Social Democrats and Greens, despite certain issues dividing them, are remarkably similar in their broader philosophy and their perspective for Demarcia.

Both parties are left-of-centre, progressive political parties. The Social Democrats originate in the labour movement and the socialist tradition, one that seeks to rectify the inequalities and harmful effects brought on by capitalism, and that seeks to forge a society based on solidarity, respect and collaboration, within the frameworks of a democratic system and with reverence for the timeless values of liberty, justice and equality.

Meanwhile, the Green Party defines itself around much the same values, but with an additional ecological perspective. The Greens share a strong commitment towards a cleaner environment, ecological sustainability, the harnessing of green energy, grassroots democracy and the preservation of natural life.

To my mind, it is an unfortunate historical happenstance that the Social Democratic and Green traditions have become separated. They have quite a lot in common, and their fundamental values and principles are fundamentally intertwined.

You can not have a truly social democratic politics, one that cares about community and about social needs, if society is based on a ceaseless, mindless consumerism that's harmful to the environment and causes grave danger to our surroundings. You can not have a truly social democratic politics if corporations are free to pollute our planet and prevent us from having breathable air and drinkable water.

At the same time, you can not have a truly green politics, one that cares about the environment, if we continue to have a culture based on selfishness, carelessness about others and the maximisation of profit. You can not have a truly green politics if the economy is based on a self-regulating, neoliberal capitalism that reduces individuals to their worth on the market and destroys systems of solidarity and friendship.

The social democratic and green traditions should not be separated from one another, and can not be separated from one another. They need each other. This is why I enthusiastically welcome this grand unification of Demarcian parties and ideologies and believe that the co-operation between them will bring out incredible results for our country.
