The Civic Unity Party Is the Only Progressive Party in Demarcia

At Sunday's Parliament session, the contrast between the two opposing sides was clearer than ever. A new President belonging to the nominally centre-left Social Democratic Party making outlandish proposals for limiting immigration and avoiding a question on reproductive freedoms to applause from the party leadership, and a Leader of the Opposition raising valid concerns about his ideas which sounded like they came from the likes of Nigel Farage or Donald Trump.
Rumors about the new President's right-wing views have been swirling for some time after his election, however the real surprise is that the party's leadership has decided to embrace his policies, instead of distancing themselves from the President and his reactionary agenda. This comes in spite of the Social Democratic Party being in a uniquely fortunate position in which they would have a parliamentary majority even without President MarcoDeVore's support, and his only weapon being a snap election which he would decisively lose now that the Demarcian people have learned his true views – provided he could even get on the ballot.
The SDP's leadership's perplexing behavior is reminiscent of the US Republican Party's establishment's treatment of the already mentioned Donald Trump, and every cautious follower of the American political scene knows that did not end well. However, their motivations were understandable at least from a Machiavellian perspective, while in this case even that explanation does not hold water – as already mentioned, with the President not having a deciding vote in Parliament, his only weapon would be a snap election which would undoubtedly make his situation even worse.
The only reason to believe this shift isn't genuine is if the party believed such views are popular among the Demarcian people and will lead them to success in future elections, but I'm sure everybody knows that is not the case. Our country prides itself in being an open, tolerant and welcoming society, and the right-wing, nominally centre-left Social Democratic Party is bound to see the definite proof of that at the next election.
With the Social Democratic Party's decision to embrace the hard-right policies of President MarcoDeVore, which cannot be explained even from an opportunistic perspective, last night's Parliament session made it more evident than ever that the Civic Unity Party is today the only truly progressive party in Demarcia.
If there is any reasonable politician left in the SDP, they must immediately launch a challenge against the current leader who is allowing this to happen. Otherwise, when the time comes to vote in the next election, voters must not forget which party showed their true colors by advocating outlandish restrictions on immigration and applauding a President who refused to rule out limiting reproductive freedoms, regardless of whether they return to masquerading as progressives and what pathetic excuses they may come up with for their present behavior.
