Voters have approved MikeBodwin's nuclear ICBMs law in a referendum which saw an intense campaign by the Social Democratic Party's Secretary urging people to reject it.

The outcome of the referendum means that the government of Demarcia will now officially be able to develop nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles, which some have decried as an unnecessary measure that threatens the country's stability and peace in the world. On the other hand, proponents argue it is a vital measure to ensure the security of the state.

Penstubal has issued a statement following the referendum result, saying that "the people have spoken, and they have made their decision". "While I respect their right to decide the country's defence policy," said Penstubal, "I remain firm in my belief that this is an incredibly dangerous move and that it threatens our international standing, as well as life on Earth as we know it."

The SDP Secretary further added that, in the next Parliament, he would be working "day and night on ensuring that this reckless policy of the CUP government is repealed. I will be proposing a complete repeal of the Demarcian Nuclear Deterrent Act at the very first session when it's possible."

"I will also work on reassuring our international partners that Demarcia will fully adhere to what the global community expects of a civilized, respectable nation", he continued. "Those of us who fought hard for the No side will ensure that the vision of a nuclear-free, peaceful Demarcia is not lost."

Immediately, the Social Democratic Party has faced criticism for the Secretary's announcement that he would work on repealing the DNDA, with one person questioning why "the parties with democracy in their name always promise to ignore referendum results" (referring to parties such as the UK Liberal Democrats, who promised to overturn the results of the 2016 Brexit referendum).

The result of Demarcia's nuclear ballot has been interpreted as a blow to the SDP, which had been hoping to deliver one final, major knockout to the CUP and crush its defence agenda. Instead, the CUP has struck back and proven that their government and their proposals still have a great degree of popularity.
