In an unexpected turn of events, the Social Democratic Party has failed to submit its parliamentary list for the upcoming election, forcing Brandin to run as an independent for the presidency and also officially confirming the SDP will not have any seats in the next Parliament.
Penstubal has refused to publicly address this event and has only communicated a brief statement upon being asked by the Demarcian Inquirer: "I am an idiot".
Sources suggest that the Social Democrats are scrambling to address the issue and find out if there is a way for them to ensure their party maintains a presence in the upcoming Parliament. The Social Democrats are also lamenting how "only the Demarcian National Party (+ the merging Greens) will be represented, thus ushering in a one-party state unless the DNP agrees to redo this election".
Indeed, the idea of a snap election has gained some support among SDP circles.
"Look, the simple fact is - it's not a good look for the DNP to be in charge of effectively a one-party state", said an anonymous SDP official who describes himself as a moron. "I believe that the new DNP leadership wants there to be political pluralism and wants a civilised opposition represented in Parliament."
Some have found it quite remarkable how low the SDP has fallen from grace over the last few months. SuperMiron noted that the party of 2020-2021 was one that triumphed in nearly every election, passed numerous bills and reduced the opposition to merely one person, while the party of 2022 is one that fails to appoint a government for weeks, fails to form a shadow cabinet for months, and fails to even submit their parliamentary election list.

It remains to be seen what the future has in store for the Social Democratic Party and, indeed, for Demarcia. Will the SDP and DNP come to an agreement on a snap election in order to bring the opposition back to the Parliament? Or will another arrangement be secured, or will the SDP have to put up and shut up? Only time will tell.
