MikeBodwin, the leader-elect of the Demarcian National Party, has been elected president, defeating Brandin, the leader of the Social Democratic Party.
MikeBodwin has pulled off a historic feat; it is the first time in nearly four years that the SDP (formerly LDP) hasn't held the presidency for two consecutive terms. It also marks a historic turnover in Demarcian history, as the comeback of the DNP is now officially sealed, with the DNP's presidential candidate winning the highest number of votes of any DNP candidate since August 2020 (also with MikeBodwin).
Brandin congratulated MikeBodwin on his victory, stating that he had no interest in national politics all along and that he had effectively given the election to the DNP's leader-elect. Brandin announced his intention to continue his work as Deputy Mayor of Dodoville and to challenge Mayor Jeskia; however, he was dismissed from his position not even an hour later.
SDP Secretary Penstubal was absent for election night, reportedly down with a severe case of panic attack from the loss of SDP hegemony. In the morning, he conceded that the SDP had lost, stating that the SDP had failed to adapt adequately to the rise of the DNP.
Penstubal, however, stated that he is confident that "our party is not dead", reminding folks that the DNP was in a similar situation before as well. He proclaimed that "social democracy shall rise again, after thorough changes within our party!"
Penstubal then went on to say that "arcane rules" as to blame for the SDP's defeats, called the DNP's victory undeserved, and expressed indignation of the country having an essentially one party parliament. In his comments on the make up of the parliament, he also mentioned the DNP's past of "trying to seize power in their own hands".
Penstubal went on to hope that the DNP will understand that "it's not a good look [for them] to have near absolute control in the country".
In his post-election night statement, MikeBodwin agreed. Celebrating the party's victory and pointing out how the "results of the last election weren't just a fluke", he agreed that Demarcia can not have a one party state, proposing a by-election which the DNP would not complete in and would allow the SDP to have one parliamentary seat in the upcoming term.
MikeBodwin also called the SDP's leadership "the same people, it's dated and restrictive and has reached a point where in its last Presidency it had no substantial new ideas". Indeed, voices within the SDP agree with MikeBodwin strongly.
"It is about time for entirely new leadership - somebody who's never been leader before", says an anonymous source from within the party. "However - it's also time for brand new ideas, and with it a complete rebranding of the party as it stands. Not necessarily a name change, but certainly a major change in both style and substance."
While there are many similarities between the disappearance of the SDP from Parliament now and the DNP's own disappearance from Parliament in November 2020, it should be noted that the SDP remains a party with several individuals. The party will likely rebound at the December election - but it remains to be seen whether they will actually return to power that month.
