Jake has been elected President, winning 5 votes in an election where he was the sole candidate.
The Social Democratic Party has won a supermajority in Parliament, despite being trounced in the popular vote. It won 2 votes to 3 for the Civic Unity Party, and the unprecedented situation is, according to SDP officials, a result of "the party's failure to mobilize its supporters and even its candidates".
A few hours after the election results came out, Penstubal declared the night "atrocious" for his SDP. He congratulated Jake on his election victory and said that the SDP wants to participate in a "National Unity Government" comprising members of both major parties as well as independents, "in order to support the revolutionary, forward march of our reformist leader Jake".
Jake has given the Demarcian Inquirer an exclusive statement after his presidential election victory:
"Citizens of Demarcia, a brand new milestone for modern history is unfolding: Demarcia's first independent president since the introduction of parties in April 2017, a new forward-thinking, united government consisting of members of various parties, all with a collective, unwavering vision for this great country. I hope that through my steadfast leadership, this country will make significant strides and advancements that will make us one of the greatest countries on the planet."
MikeBodwin, the acting leader of the Civic Unity Party, has provided the Demarcian Inquirer with exclusive post-election comments of his own.
"I feel it was a very successful night for the CUP and the country. The CUP solidified its place in Parliament, it also showed that the country trusts the CUP more than the SDP at this time amid recent chaos. While they still hold a majority, it should not be undermined that the SDP has been beaten down to the minimum tonight. As for the country, Jake was the best option, a fresh person, trusted background, new ideas and possibly giving the way to get rid of inactivity. Jake did it all without a party behind him, which is why I believe he was successful, because there was no party History to question. Only time will tell whether he will save us or whether he will condemn us to fighting in a two party system filled with chaos and inactivity. Now if you excuse me, I am off to celebrate."
This historic election is expected to have a significant impact on the future of this country, potentially ushering in an era of unity and progress, in the eyes of officials from both parties.
