BusyHustler has been elected Leader of the Civic Unity Party, thereby succeeding in a leadership election triggered by the resignation of President MikeBodwin.
It didn't take even half an hour for the party to start unraveling.
At 8:54 PM UTC, just 24 minutes after his election as party leader, the by-election result came in. While it was by no means unexpected that Penstubal would win a seat, what was unexpected a few weeks ago was that the by-election would end up causing the Civic Unity Party to lose its parliamentary majority.
Mere minutes after that event came another massive blow: at 8:59 PM UTC, Penstubal announced Prime Minister Jeskia's departure from the Civic Unity Party and her defection to the Social Democratic Party. Penstubal hailed her as a "towering figure" who "has quite a good sense of what the right side is and which to stick with". He further added that Jeskia "defined the history of the modern SDP" with her "constructive voice and constant endeavors to improve our party, to boost it, to make it more active".
Meanwhile, Jeskia confirmed Penstubal's announcement and added some words of her own. "I was wrong in my decision to leave my progressive roots for political power", she said solemnly but steadily. "If President Bodwin wants me to resign as PM, I will. That is up to him"
These two events present another in a series of massive blows to the CUP government over the last few weeks, and the beginning of perhaps a very agonizing time for the governing party that is now led by BusyHustler, a young and inexperienced politician, who might be keen to exploit his youth and lack of experience as an asset rather than a liability.
