One of the most bruising, divisive and chaotic Parliament sessions has just taken place and ended after an hour of intense drama and fights on various topics, primarily between Prime Minister MikeBodwin and Leader of the Opposition Vincent_Wolff.
The session, chaired by Speaker of the Parliament Penstubal in the absence of Deputy Speaker SuperMiron, began with the passage of the Building and Public Works Programme Act, also known as Buildfare. The programme will, according to Jeskia, allow people to apply to build for the government and to display their creativity and talents. The act passed unanimously, with support from all sides in the Parliament.
The act may have passed with the support of all the parties, but the entire session afterwards was a 'complete trainwreck', as described by one Member of Parliament from the Social Democratic Party.
Question time began with Vincent_Wolff lambasting the government's supposedly low activity levels, and asked the President what she has to say about this. In her response, the President attempted to spin the question against Vincent_Wolff, asking her "what have you, the entire DNP or anyone on the other side done to help the people of Demarcia in November?". This line of questioning backfired heavily, as Vincent_Wolff immediately replied "We weren't in government in November. Good idea Madame President, I'm all for it, giving the DNP power to do things!"
Afterwards, confusion occurred when Vincent_Wolff questioned the President on the government's plans, and the President defected to PM MikeBodwin. Speaker Penstubal was confused on what to do, but after a few minutes the dispute was resolved and the Prime Minister proceeded to answer the questions on the government's plans, stating that the government has plans regarding the military, environment as well as a judicial branch, among other things.
After his response, the Leader of the Opposition proceeded to blast the President for defecting to the Prime Minister, asking her if she is able to speak for herself or if she is unable to give proper answers when being scrutinised. The President responded that she did it because he was able to go deeper into explaining than she was and that "we all have our strengths and we capitalise on them".
Drama then truly kicked off and the session spiraled out of control when opposition leader Vincent_Wolff turned towards PM MikeBodwin for her questioning.
MikeBodwin was asked by the opposition leader on how he felt about being in a coalition government with a president he supposedly found "insane" and whom he "never could have dreamt of going into a coalition with" prior to the deal they had clenched in September. MikeBodwin defended himself, stating that he decided to give her a chance, and that certain things she did and promised surprised him.
Vincent_Wolff would not let go; she alleged that there was something shadier going on, and that a secret deal that people weren't told the details of was forged late into the night. The most shocking allegation Vincent_Wolff made was that there might have been some "romance" involved.
The Prime Minister strongly denied this allegation and called it "so laughable that I genuinely laughed my ass off". He described the deal between himself and Jeskia as "not a shady deal" and that it was simply a deal that he would be in charge of the military and the environment in the event of a Jeskia presidency. He confirmed that he did have negative feelings towards Jeskia prior to September, but that in politics personal feelings do not matter and that matters is getting your agenda and your job done.
Vincent_Wolff then once again blasted MikeBodwin for offering a chance to a politician "without any kind of certainty". She then proceeded to bring up the Novaland situation that occurred last summer, calling it a "freak show" and stating that the Prime Minister bears responsibility for "some quite disastrous events", and that, despite President Jeskia's threats, no investigation ever took place.
MikeBodwin called Vincent_Wolff's comments "unbacked" and "stupid". In a surprising moment, PM MikeBodwin lambasted hircine, the former leader of the Green Party and one of the architects of the Novaland situation, whom he described as "insane", saying that "the man should not have had power in Government" and that he supports an investigation into the situation.
Question time ended following this exchange. What ensued were desperate pleas for unity coming from Secretary of the Cabinet Brandin, Minister of Justice and Interior GeorgeChambers and Speaker of the Parliament Penstubal.
"To the Leader of the Opposition, members of differing parties, and the people of Demarcia. I want to remind you that your government is working, for you" said the Secretary of the Cabinet, "Despite the attacks from members of differing parties, (...) we remain committed to putting those thoughts and feelings on the back burner to better serve all people in Demarcia, regardless of their political affiliations. The President is the President of not just her party, but the entire country."
The Minister of Justice and Interior, meanwhile, said that the Members of Parliament should "try to cooperate once more", and that he "always liked silver linings, where despite of our colors and perspectives, we still see ourselves for this country. Giving good and receiving the best."
The Speaker of the Parliament , meanwhile, thanked the Members of Parliament for participating in the session, stating that he believes that "vibrant debate and vigorous questioning of the government, holding public officials to account, is the halmark of our democracy" and that "it is what makes Demarcia a great nation, and what we absolutely need more of in the future". At the same time, he also reminded the Members of Parliament that "we are all in the end human, and that we need to collaborate together to resolve the issues facing the Demarcian people".
The Speaker also noted that this was the first session in a very long while that featured full attendance of all Members of Parliament, and expressed hope that "this is a sign of good times to come and increased levels of activity and participation".
The session was an extraordinarily turbulent one, one that will surely be remembered for a long time to come by all participants and all viewers of the session. It is unclear yet what the effects of this Parliament meeting will be; one thing is certain though - Vincent_Wolff has led substantial damage to the Red-Green coalition government today and has once again thrown a wedge inbetween them, just like she had in July 2021.
