A fight has broken out in Parliament between Penstubal on one side and Vincent_Wolff and MikeBodwin on the other, with all three trading strong, borderline personal attacks.
Penstubal introduced a resolution to repeal the Demarcian Nuclear Deterrent Act, stating that he is strongly opposed to "this shameful act" that "endangers" the country's national security. Vincent_Wolff responded with a strong attack calling her Social Democratic Party "intolerant [yet] again".
"Nuclear weaponry is needed in a time like this. It doesn't mean they have to be used, but it shows a statement. A statement, that we should not be messed with" said the veteran SDP politician, the new Foreign and Defence Minister.
Penstubal replied by rejecting Vincent_Wolff's accusations of intolerance within the SDP. He then gave a controversial, emotional and slightly disjointed speech in which he questioned whether "we want to emulate a dictator in Moscow" and dismissed nuclear weapons as "useless" and "putting [Demarcia] at risk".
MikeBodwin then responded to Penstubal, attacking him for trying to "justify ignoring the [nuclear] referendum". He brought forward his defence of nuclear armament, saying that "there are no alternatives to nuclear deterrents as effective as nuclear deterrents" and that any system Demarcia has "will not match the effectiveness of a deterrent".
President JeskiaWeathers then gave an incredibly bizarre and perplexing statement, randomly claiming that Putin had threatened Demarcia before saying "fuck it" and returning to her seat.
Moments later, Vincent_Wolff made a stunning attack against Penstubal, telling him she doesn't "have to slow down at all" and that he should understand faster, after his attack against her. She accused him of disregarding the will of the majority in their party, and attacked his attempt to draw a comparison with Putin.
Furthermore, the new Foreign and Defence Minister extolled the benefits of nuclear armament, saying that it would boost the economy through creating new work, provide an advantage in strategy and boost the morale of the people.
"In politics you need to be able to stand on your pedestal, and we don't need spineless behaviour. The voting has decided that [the Deterrent Act] should be put forward, and your delusions of total war shouldn't [besmirch] such a wonderful idea of our nation's defense" she told Penstubal.
Penstubal then called Vincent_Wolff "incredibly naive" for believing nuclear weapons would resolve the country's national security problems and make the country respectable on the global stage. He then addressed MikeBodwin, quoting from The Guardian to justify his opposition to nuclear weapons on grounds of their "ineffectiveness" and "uselessness". He suggested focusing on conventional military matters instead.
Penstubal and MikeBodwin both agreed that a compromise should be made, but MikeBodwin said that eliminating nuclear weapons would be a line he would not cross, "until alternatives as effective are built". The two agreed on talks outside of Parliament.
The tension was palpable in the Parliament chamber this evening, as some of Demarcia's most important politicians in history united, despite party differences, in their opposition to Penstubal's attempts to get rid of nuclear weapons. With Mayor Brandin having joined in opposition to Penstubal's plans, the SDP party secretary finds himself further and further isolated.
Still, Penstubal has addressed the Demarcian Inquirer after the session, stating that he "will not back down" and that he believes "the majority in Demarcia is, really, on my side".
